Response
to Intervention:
Just What Is Scientifically Based Instruction?
Joseph Kovaleski, D.Ed., NCSP (return
to top)
Recent calls for reform of the special education process have
recommended that a response to intervention (Rti) model be used
in place of the traditional ability-achievement discrepancy
approach for students with learning disabilities. This workshop
will present practical procedures for
implementing the three tiers of the RTI process: teambased screening
and interventions for groups of students, building-based teams
to support teachers in delivering effective instruction to students
who are at risk for school failure, and determination of eligibility
for special education. Particular emphasis will be placed on
identifying those instructional and classroom management strategies
that have substantial
research support and have helped students succeed.
About the presenter:
Dr. Joseph Kovaleski is Professor of Educational and School
Psychology and Director of the Doctoral Program in School Psychology
at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He reviously worked
as a school psychologist and district administrator and was
director of Pennsylvanias Instructional Support Team (IST)
Project, a statewide prereferral intervention initiative.
Evidenced-based
Reading and Spelling Intervention Techniques
Laurice Joseph, Ph.D (return
to top)
This presentation will present interventions for basic reading
and spelling skills that have some evidence to suggest their
effectiveness for helping children improve on basic literacy
performance. An overview of what constitutes evidence-based
interventions will be provided, followed by a presentation of
various reading and spelling techniques, a discussion concerning
differential uses of these techniques and a discussion of functional
analyses to test the effectiveness of these interventions.
About the presenter:
Dr. Laurice Joseph is an assistant professor of
school Psychology at The Ohio State University. She has published
several articles on demonstrating the effectiveness of emergent
literacy techniques for children of various ages and
leaning characteristics. She has written a chapter on reading
interventions for Best Practices in School Psychology
IV and the Encyclopedia for Applied Psychology.
The
Use of Response to Intervention Data For SLD Identification
Janet Graden, Ph.D (return
to top)
Ohio Standards for the identification of students
with learning disabilities have changed significantly to eliminate
the use of a test-based discrepancy to now give a framework
for teams to follow the federal definition. An important new
requirement, in both special education and general education
Ohio standards, is the documentation of intervention data for
eligibility. This workshop will focus on helping participants
to
understand these new requirements for use of response to intervention
data for SLD identification. The content will be organized to
follow the requirements in the Ohio Standards and in the federal
definition. Ohios SLD Toolkit will be used and explained,
with implementation examples for the requirement for eligibility.
The workshop goals are for participants to gain knowledge of
the SLD requirements and gain understanding of methods for demonstrating
eligibility in a more direct and intervention-based way.
Dr. Janet Graden is a Professor of School Psychology and
Division Head for Human Services at the University of
Cincinnati, College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human
Services. Dr. Graden has provided extensive training
nationally and throughout Ohio to school-based teams to implement
intervention-based practices.
