The OSPA Scholarship Fund began around the year 2000 when a group of Executive Board members felt that it was time to follow in the footsteps of the NASP Minority Scholarship and start one of our own. Valorie Wolcott-Mendelson took that up as a challenge and researched options for collecting and managing the scholarship fund. Val also took on the task of starting a raffle to help raise funds for the scholarship. Our first raffle was held in the fall of 2000 and we’ve had one every fall since — well, except last year!
In 2008 we had totaled enough in the scholarship fund to give out one $1,000 scholarship. In 2012 we were able to raise the scholarship level to $2,000 and in 2015 we were able to raise the number of scholarships to 2. In 2020 we raised the amounts to $3,000.
To be a school psychologist today one must be remarkable. You have to be bright, skilled, persistent, flexible, an in-the-box thinker, an out-of-the-box thinker, curious, technologically savvy, woke, humble and ethical. Those descriptions do certainly apply to our scholarship recipients this year.
